All I Want Is You guitar chords

All I Want Is You
by U2
tabbed by Matt Stewart,

I have been trying for over a year now to perfect this tab, and I think
I finally have it. The only thing that I don't really know about this
song is the superior sound qualaity that Edge gets. If you have any
tips for perfecting the sound, let me know (i.e., how much overdrive,
compressor, or whatever).

First, THERE IS NO CAPO ON THE FIRST FRET. I played this song up until
a few weeks ago with a CAPO, and the sound never sounded right on the
main riff. If you do use a capo, use it for a second guitar to play
along with the main guitar. THE FOLLOWING IS MY NEW, FINAL, AND

***TUNE YOUR GUITAR DOWN 1/2 STEP*** (i.e., to Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, eb)

A [x 0 2 2 2 0]
D [x x 0 2 3 2]
F#m [2 4 4 2 2 2]
A(V) [5 7 7 6 5 5]
D(V) [x 5 7 7 7 x]
A(XII) [x 12 14 14 14 x] or [x 0 14 14 14 x]
D* [x x 0 14 15 14] note: make sure you leave the D string open

For the intro, simply thumb pick A and D chords on an acoustic guitar.

     A D
You say you want
    A D
A diamond on a ring of gold
     A D
You say you want
       A D
Your story to remain untold
              F#m D
But all the promises we make
          F#m D
>From the cradle to the grave
A D MAIN RIFF (see below)
When all I want is you

MAIN RIFF (electirc; use some reverb, .4 sec delay)
        A D
g--2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-(2)- Play this pattern twice
d--2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-0-0-0-0-(0)- Let the notes ring

(same chords as first)
When Bono sings,
"You say, you'll give me eyes in a moon of blindness..."
Edge adds this little riff:

e----5-----5--5--5-- improvise here, listen to song for timing

Then, at the "But all the promises...." part, go to this little riff:

"When all I want...." - then to this riff:

Now Play the MAIN RIFF

Play the same little Riffs from Verse 2
When Verse 3 is over, play the following:

As soon as Bono finishes third verse, begin by strumming the chords
A(V) and D(V), then switch to this little riff:

Then, as soon as Bono sings "You.....all I want is You..."
Begin by strumming A(V) as Bono sings "You...."
On the last "...You...",
Rip into the A(XII) and then D*
Immediately after the D*, play the following solo:

b-2-2-2-2-2-3-3-3-3-3-2-2-2-2-2-3-3-3-3-3- After this slide up and
g-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2- play the A(XII) and D*
d-2-2-2-2-2-0-0-0-0-0-2-2-2-2-2-0-0-0-0-0- Let the last note ring

That's basically it. Just remember to tune your guitar down a 1/2 step.
I also encourage playing along to the song to understand my tab.

*All I Want Is You--This is in A, and it's tuned
town a 1/2 step. I didn't look at the solo you had, but
basically it's an octave above the beginning of the solo.
The 2 opening chords aren't A and D, it's really a D
variant, which is just D without fingering the F# on the
1st string, and leaving the 1st string open.

U2 "All I Want is You"

The verses/intro alternate with A and D chords
("You say you want diamonds on a ring of gold
You say you want your story to remain untold")
("All the promises we make, from the cradle to the grave...")
       uses: F#m D

    End chords:
     Am7 and D7

  D x x 0 2 3 2

This should be F#m to D, but Bmin to G sounds pretty good. 8)

>finaly, that little riff that the edge plays after bono sings "all I want, is
>you" is just the first little riff with the ocassional sus2 chord thrown in.
>hopefully i'll have time to make a better transcription of this song sometime.
>it would sure help to have my guitar with me when I hear it next...
In order to play along with the song, use G, C, and Em, and capo on the
first fret....

(capo 1st fret)

    G C
You want....
        Em C
All the promises we make
         Em C
From the cradle to the grave
     G C G
When All I Want Is You

(these are the same sounding chords to U2's "Numb" if you want to try a
weird cover version combining two songs)

I try to get by on Edge's riffs with something like:

The strings in the end use a G7, C, G, progression I believe.

I think U2 plays this in A, tuned down half a step. I use G because I
like the sound.

INTRO: G (320033) C (x32010) (repeat)
For an intro riff, I alternate the second-string D and the
open G on the G chord, then the open high E and G of the C,
       adding appropriate bass notes:
       G (d"d" g"d" g"d" ) C (g"e" g"e" g"e" g") (repeat)

Gl give me eyes on a moon of blindness
A river in a time of dryness, a harbor in the tempest

BRIDGE: All I want is you (falsetto, over intro riff)

You way you want our love to work out right
To last with me through the night
And you say you want a diamond on a ring of gold
Your story to remain untold, your love not to grow cold

CHORUS: But all the promises we break...

BRIDGE to fade

*corrections from
The currently posted intro and main riff are correct, but i believe the
higher riff (the current "C" riff) is:

"All i want you" - live from Mexico City.

I'm not sure of the tuning, but if you use standard tuning,
it should be ok! (I tried standard tuning for "Pride (In the name of love)",
but that doesn't work, so it must be a special tuning. (I think The Edge
uses a capo on the first fret for "I still haven't found what i'm looking
for", but i'm not sure if he uses it on "All i want is you".)

Here are the lyrics, the chords, and the tab of the final solo:

A Dsus2 A Dsus2

Then after this comes the solo, starting after Bono has sung
"All i want is you" a few times.

I belive it's something like this (Not sure though):

(The open D is optional...i use it from time to time, to add some
"spice" to the sound)

While Bono sings: "And they will never....tear us apart.....
and they will never.....tear us apart......won't tear us....
apaaaaaart.......thank you!" (Inxs-"Never tear us apart")

(End with a A-chord on Bono's long "Apaaaaaaart...."

Well, that should be the most of it.

If it checks out well, or doesn't check out at all, please let
me know what you think!

Thanks alot!
